Physical Education
Monitoring of Physical Education and Shepway Sports Trust Liaison: Mrs Coughlan
At Stella Maris our pupils learn that sports and games are a fun, worthwhile activity. They enjoy a wide range of different activities and are given the opportunity to take part in at least two hours of physical education every week. Activities are designed to teach a range of skills and to help them develop an excellent team spirit.
After school clubs, depending on the time of year, include football, netball, cricket and tag rugby.
We participate in as many inter-school competitions as we can, with considerable success. Last year our cricket team won the Folkestone Town Council Kwik Cricket tournament for the second year in succession, and our football team reached the semi-finals of the Herald Cup.
Sports Day is one of the highlights of our school year. The children compete in a range of traditional races, from the Long Distance race to the Egg and Spoon Race, and points are awarded to the first three places. Each year the winning team is celebrated at assembly, with trophies awarded for the sprints and the long distance races.
Physical Education - Intent
We believe that broad and balanced curriculum of high quality Physical Education and a range of experiences form the basis for lifelong sporting and recreational activity.
We will strive to promote school sport and physical opportunities which inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competition with themselves and others at competitive sport and other physically demanding activities.
Through these opportunities the children will develop: a passion to compete in sport and other activities; build character (physical, personal, social, moral, spiritual, cultural and emotional); and embed values such as fairness and respect. In addition to this, the experiences the children will be exposed to will also continue to grow the pupil’s ability to express, communicate, appreciate and understand what it means to be physically confident and develop resilience in a way which supports their physical health, fitness, mental health and well-being.
Physical Education - Implementation
Our PE programme and curriculum overview are designed to allow all pupils the opportunity to achieve the curriculum aims. They are written specifically to meet the needs of our pupils to allow them to achieve their full potential in a fully inclusive approach. This will be achieved by:
· offering a differentiated curriculum to develop competence in a broad range of physical activities.
· Sustained periods of physical activity .
· promoting and encouraging relevant social and self-help skills.
· developing a pupil’s mental health and well-being.
· raising pupil’s expectations of themselves.
· offering a variety of teaching and learning styles.
· building on pupils existing skills and engaging them in competitive sports and activities.
· promoting gifted and talented pupils within P.E in school and gaining access to out of school opportunities for gifted and talented pupils. Promoting intervention to develop the pupil further.
· promoting school club links where ever possible.
To promote a whole school Physical Education curriculum, offer, relevant for each pupil. This will be achieved by:
· developing and improving personal psycho-motor skill levels, both gross and fine,
· understanding, developing and maintaining a reasonable fitness level, with a positive attitude towards hygiene,
· enjoying physical activity in its many forms,
· promoting out of school participation in sport, competitive and non-competitive,
· developing and applying skills, wherever possible, to the highest level,
· appreciating and understanding the performance and efforts of others,
· promoting and developing attributes integral to any physical education lesson e.g. confidence, tolerance, determination, resilience, self-esteem, personal discipline and satisfaction and appreciation of others,
· promoting, whenever possible, external accreditation within the subject,
· developing a healthy lifestyle.
· developing and promoting the skills of swimming and personal survival in water.
Physical Education - Impact
The impact of the PE curriculum on our children at Stella Maris is for children to have a passion and understanding towards health and exercise.
We want the Physical activity to have a positive impact on every pupil’s mental health and well-being.
All of our pupils will have improved self confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of movement situations and have an understanding of the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
Our pupils will be able to develop as part of a team, learning how to communicate with others and work together. These communication skills will not only benefit them in school but also in the wider community and in later life as they transition into Secondary School.
The impact of competition and competitive sports allows them to cope with disappointments, being able to communicate in an appropriate manner and adhere to rules and regulations which will help our pupils manage challenges.
Having access to out-of-school competitions through School Games, Shepway Sports Trust competitions and Kent Catholic Schools Partnership inter-school events will impact on the pupils positively, allowing them to experience the 'buzz' of competing in a competitive environment.
