Maths

Subject Leader: Mrs Cowan

Our Maths Curriculum Statement:

Our Maths curriculum at Stella Maris is used to promote a love of the core subject and enables our children to see how it is applicable to their everyday lives. We encourage our learning values of Independence, Interdependence, Challenge, Spirituality, Thinking and Creativity to ensure high standards of achievement and success for all our children.

Our curriculum is based firmly on the White Rose Maths scheme - please see below the progression document which demonstrates how our curriculum links to the guidance provided in the National Curriculum.

The document provides an overview from Years 1-6 so you can clearly see how the learning and skills are developed over time.

There is also an overview for Early Years Foundation Stage showing how the Maths scheme of learning develops through the early years.

Maths - Intent

What are we trying to do?

Our Maths curriculum at Stella Maris is used to promote a love of the core subject and enables our children to see how it is applicable to their everyday lives. We encourage our learning values of Independence, Interdependence, Challenge, Spirituality, Thinking and Creativity to ensure high standards of achievement and success for all our children.

Through our creative and rich maths curriculum, we intend to foster the curiosity of our children enabling them to become competent and independent mathematicians. We follow a ‘mastery approach’ to teaching mathematics; an inclusive method based on our firm belief that all our children can achieve.

We intend for all children to build a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts, which provides a strong foundation for the fundamental skills needed to solve the problems found in everyday life. Mathematics is taught through three key areas of mastery; varied fluency, mathematical reasoning and problem solving. In doing so we aim for our children to build resilience, develop a greater sense of number and confidently articulate their thinking.

Maths - Implementation

How are we putting our intent into practice?

We follow the White Rose Maths scheme of learning to ensure full curriculum coverage. Within this scheme, each National Curriculum objective is broken down into fluency, reasoning and problem solving and our teaching staff use mathematical challenges to teach for mastery – an approach that can extend and deepen the understanding of pupils within each year group. Carefully shaped lessons and meaningful resources that secure fundamental maths skills and stimulate deep conceptual and procedural knowledge underpin our Maths curriculum. At Stella Maris, we value the importance of arithmetic and children are taught daily sessions to reinforce key skills. We ensure lesson objectives are shared in small steps and children are sufficiently challenged with ‘Digging Deeper’ tasks.

Our teachers use the White Rose scheme as a core for our planning for EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage), Key Stages 1 and 2 in conjunction with a range of other resources such as Maths No Problem, Classroom Secrets and PIXL.

Children at Stella Maris are exposed to the ‘CPA’ approach:

Concrete: Manipulatives and concrete objects are carefully used for children to explain and understand what they are doing.

PictorialChildren use pictorial representations to support their reasoning and solve problems.

Abstract: Once the foundations are secure, our children can confidently develop onto the more abstract use of numbers and key concepts.

Maths - Impact

So, what is the impact?

The learning in mathematics ensures children understand how number is essential to everyday life and to provide the children with memorable experiences that enables a passion for the subject – children at our school are keen to talk about their work and their love of maths is reflected in the high quality work they produce.

From the very start, we help the children to grow as curious mathematicians to ensure they make progress to meeting their Early Learning Goals. We continue to improve overtime by ensuring positive outcomes for all year groups allowing children to progress well- encouraging a commitment to life-long learning.

The children at our school are guided on a learning journey that ensures they are ready for their next steps at secondary school with the skills needed to be happy, articulate and confident mathematicians. Children leave our school with precious memories from their progress and special achievements created at Stella Maris.
